„I never bought into that idea of using material other than paint,
or using a tool that wasn’t a brush.
As you know, people were staining, dropping, and throwing paint.
And I just loved touch. I still do.
I love the feeling of a human hand making a mark,
and I haven’t left that.“

In her mysterious figurative compositions and vibrant, luminous color palettes, Katherine Bradford (b. 1942, New York) skillfully combines the traditions of Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting with contemporary questions of identity and gender, typically placing her figures in dreamlike and otherworldly settings devoid of spatial perspective, such as outer space or the open sea. Bradford’s motifs including floating figures, swimmers, flying supermen and -women, couples, or men in suits, surrounded by planets, houses, or beaches often seem vulnerable, awkward, and exposed. Her paintings draw their atmospheric, metaphorical power from this playful engagement with emotion and humor. Interested in delving into the depths of “who we are, how we fit in… how we look and interact with one another,” Katherine Bradford employs the strategies of abstraction and androgyny to explore ideas of self and identity.
