Lukas Quietzsch’s practice negotiates the visual codes and conditionalities of painting. In his works, visual references appear blurred, transfigured, and transformed beyond recognition, instead facilitating associative interpretations and moments of partial identification.

Through the formal principles and procedures that structure his approach to painting, Quietzsch’s works frequently hold a degree of tension. During the painterly process, Quietzsch adds layers of gouache only to subsequently wash them away. As a procedure it both discloses and obscures, complicating acts of viewing and interpretation, and implicating viewers as active participants.

As changing formations and associations continue to emerge and disintegrate— references and potential meanings remain contingent upon durational engagement and are subject to change.

the appeal of individualism presents a new body of work by Lukas Quietzsch.
