The exhibition Geometry of Light explores, for the first time, the direct influence of Karl Benjamin’s hard-edge painting on the early conceptual photography of Grey Crawford. Though working in different media, both artists were rooted in Southern California and shared a common visual language – one grounded in the precise use of geometry, structure, and abstraction. Benjamin’s influence is evident in Crawford’s urban landscapes, particularly the Umbra and Chroma series from 1970s and 80s, which investigate abstraction through the intersection of photography and painting.

The exhibition marks a significant moment of dialogue between two generations of California artists, tracing how Benjamin’s legacy extended beyond painting to shape new forms of conceptual image-making.
