What happens when history slips into myth? In The Lie, the Larp and the Lusophile, Austin Martin White explores the porous boundary between historical memory, cultural fiction and collective belief. Drawing on Brazil’s rich interplay of colonial history and popular image-making, White moves from the legendary Baroque sculptor Aleijadinho to the vivid tradition of literatura de cordel—tracing how images and stories shape our understanding of the past and, in an age increasingly defined by competing narratives, the present.

In his second solo exhibition at Capitain Petzel, White brings together paintings and works on paper that extend his distinctive and unique visual language across painting, drawing, printmaking and sculptural relief. Historical sources are fragmented, reconfigured and layered, becoming something at once familiar and elusive. In White’s work, history is never fixed: it is continually rewritten through the images, stories and acts of imagination through which we construct—and believe in—the world around us.
