British artist Mary Ramsden (b. 1984) is celebrated for abstract paintings that balance intensity and introspection through gestural brushwork and vibrant, layered surfaces. Her current exhibition In Touch at Wentrup Berlin explores the studio as a porous space—part sanctuary, part stage—where thought, memory, and instinct converge in a nonverbal, sensory process. Ramsden describes painting as connecting with everything one has learned without intellectualizing it, like a form of muscle memory. The resulting works resist fixed meaning, hovering between what is and what can be known. As they exit the studio, they invite viewers to do the same: to perceive without needing to define.
